Jones, a highly touted linebacker from Winter Park, Florida, has scholarship
offers from schools such as USC, Florida, Oklahoma, and Florida State, among
many others, so TR caught up with him for an exclusive interview where the
electric linebacker discussed his recruitment, his game, and his plans for
the future.
Describing Jones as dynamic would be an understatement, as he plays multiple
positions on both sides of the ball.
“Most schools talk to me about playing outside linebacker and playing
defensive end on third down and rushing the passer which is what I do now
a lot.” Jones said. “I also play some running back on offense and my coach has
talked about maybe me playing a little quarterback this year also.”
Jones plays in the talent rich state of Florida, where many Division I
scholarships are divvied out, but says a certain trio from Seminole High School
stand out above the rest.
“The best players I’ve played against are probably the three from Seminole (High
School), Andre Debose, Ray Ray Armstrong, and Dyron Dye” Jones explained.
On the recruiting front, Jones estimates he has “about 30” offers, but three of
them are starting to stand out.
“Florida, Oklahoma, and Southern Cal are starting to stick out.” Jones offered.
“At Florida, they’ve played well the past few years winning national
championships so that’s attracting and at USC, they always have players coming
in and getting drafted.”
The school that many people consider the team to beat for Jones is Florida
State.
“I was a fan of Florida State,” Jones said. “I have family down there and that’s
the team I grew up watching.”
Jones, who compares himself to NFL linebacker Keith Rivers, also knows he
definitely wants to travel west for some of his official visits.
“I’m probably going to take my five official visits after my basketball season.”
Jones said. “I really want to go out to California and see Southern Cal, and I
also want to go to Oklahoma.”
Jones also described to ThaRinger.com what he was looking for in a college, as
well as what he thought of the recruiting process.
“With what I’m looking for, I just want to be comfortable with where I’m going
to go to.” Jones described. “It’s (the recruiting process) real fun and I’m just
enjoying it right now.”
And for those hoping for a summer decision from Jones, you’ll be disappointed to
find out that he plans on waiting much longer than that to make his pledge.
“Probably around January is when I’m going to decide I don’t know yet,” Jones
explained. “I might announce at one of the All American games or I could wait to
national signing day, but I’m not sure yet.”
Jones said he keeps in touch with Florida State commitment Darious Cummings, as
well as Florida commitment Trey Burton. He comes in at #36 in ThaRinger.com’s
Top 300 for the Class of 2010, and #4 player in the state of Florida.
